Chelsea, Newcastle United run rule over Jonathan David

Chelsea and Newcastle United are scouting LOSC Lille attacking sensation Jonathan David ahead of a potential transfer in 2025.

Chelsea and Newcastle United are both interested in reinforcing their squad in January. The Premier League clubs seek more firepower in the final third of the pitch and according to a report from Graeme Bauley on TBR Football, both English bigwigs recently scouted Jonathan David.

The Canadian striker has been a consistent performer for LOSC Lille, and representatives of the Blues and the Magpies travelled to France to watch him in action against Lyon. David has gone from strength to strength since joining the Ligue 1 giants back in 2020. The 24-year-old striker has been in exceptional form over the last 18 months, and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed.

He has 12 goals and two assists in his 17 outings this season. While Jonathan David is a key figure in the Lille first team, he is expected to be on the move in the near future. The Ligue 1 club are keen on keeping hold of their star. However, with his contract running out at the end of the season, they do not have many options to play with.

The former KAA Gent striker has already made it clear that he does not intend on signing a new deal. As a result, Lille could look to sell him in the winter and raise some funds. They won’t want to lose out on him for free next summer.

Chelsea and Newcastle are monitoring David

With the 24-year-old potential available for a cut-price fee in January, Chelsea and Newcastle United have emerged as potential destinations. The Blues were on the lookout for a top-quality number nine during the summer. While they failed to get it done back then, their search continues.

The Magpies, who failed to do much in the summer, are also looking to strengthen Eddie Howe’s team, and Jonathan David could be an exceptional signing for them. Nicolas Jackson and Alexander Isak are both doing well for their respective clubs. But Chelsea and Newcastle seem to seek more depth up top, and David could be an ideal cover. He will also challenge for a place in the starting XI.

Both Newcastle United and Chelsea were present in the stands to watch him score in their 1-1 draw against Lyon in Ligue 1 last weekend. Representatives of both clubs are quite impressed by his performance and with the Canadian international available for a cut-price fee, they will surely look to make moves as soon as the window reopens in January.
