Manchester United could walk away from their chase of Alphonso Davies and turn to Ben Chilwell to solve their problems at left-back.
According to Caught Offside, Alphonso Davies could prove too expensive for Manchester United due to his wage demands. The Red Devils are ready to back away from their pursuit of the Canadian full-back and turn their attention towards Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell.
Manchester United clearly have problems in the left-back role, as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have not stayed fit for a long time now. This season has been no different, and since the duo has sat on the sidelines, the Red Devils have used their right-backs on the left-hand side, which unbalances the team in a big way.
Manchester United have been reportedly keen on Alphonso Davies over the last few weeks, with suggestions that they are ready to make an approach for the Canadian international. The Bayern Munich man is running down his contract in Germany as he looks set to leave on a free transfer next summer.
Real Madrid are the front-runners in the chase, although Manchester United were keen to explore their chances in the race. In any case, they are planning to end their interest in the 23-year-old Real Madrid target, with his reported €12 million-a-year wage demands being the reason.
Manchester United are seemingly run a bit differently than before under the new management of INEOS, meaning there is a deeper emphasis on not paying high wages. While Davies’s potential availability on a free transfer does offset some of the costs involved in signing a top-rated left-back, the wages might seem unsustainable for what the club is planning for the future.
Manchester United to consider Chilwell move?
Ben Chilwell is available in the market on a cut-price deal after being left out of Chelsea’s plans for the season. He does feature in the squad once in a while but realistically does not have a future at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United are ready to turn their attention toward Chilwell as an alternative to Davies, although the former Leicester City man does have his share of persistent injury issues. While he could be a good option for the Red Devils, their fans would certainly want the club to fight for a player of Davies’s quality, although, for the time being, they could take Chilwell for what he is worth.
