La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly mulling over a move to sign 23-year-old Dutch wing-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bundesliga counterpart Bayer Leverkusen.
According to an update by reputed German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Jeremie Frimpong is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for a right-back as they look for a long-term successor to Dani Carvajal. Meanwhile, the Bayer Leverkusen wing-back will cost around €40 million due to a release clause in his contract with the Bundesliga club.
The rise and rise of Jeremie Frimpong
Jeremie Frimpong has established himself as one of the best full-backs in the Bundesliga since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in January 2021. The Dutchman arrived at BayArena as a highly-rated prospect but has surpassed expectations in the last three and a half years.
The 23-year-old was instrumental in Bayer Leverkusen winning the 2023/24 Bundesliga title and has continued his rich vein of form this term. Frimpong has amassed one goal and five assists in ten appearances across all competitions, with Die Werkself remaining competitive in every competition.
Frimpong’s exploits for Bayer Leverkusen have helped him break into the Dutch national team, and he has turned out seven times thus far for the Oranje. Meanwhile, the Bayer Leverkusen wing-back’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid.
La Liga move on the horizon?
Jeremie Frimpong has been on Real Madrid’s radar for a long time. The continued interest in the Dutchman is understandable, considering Dani Carvajal is approaching the twilight of his career. In addition, Lucas Vazquez is on the wrong side of 30 and might not be at Real Madrid beyond the 2024/25 season.
Furthermore, Carvajal will return from a long-term knee injury-enforced layoff next season. So, Real Madrid should invest in a top-class right-back, with several candidates, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, featuring on the wishlist. However, Frimpong is also a viable target, with the Bayer Leverkusen wing-back available for an attractive price of €40 million.
With the 23-year-old Dutch full-back having a release clause in his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, the decision is out of the Bundesliga champions’ hands. It will be interesting to see if Real Madrid will be ready to cough up €40 million to sign Frimpong next year.
