Chelsea talks to sign Gabriel Mec collapse

The talks between Chelsea and Gremio regarding 16-year-old Brazilian attacking sensation Gabriel Mec have collapsed.

According to a report by Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Gabriel Mec will unlikely join Chelsea after turning 18. The Blues were in talks to sign the Gremio attacking sensation, and a deal worth €24 million was close. However, they have backed out from the negotiations to land the Brazilian whizkid due to concerns regarding his performance.

Gabriel Mec is the latest highly-rated prospect to rise in prominence in Brazil. A native of Rio de Janeiro, the South American teenage wonderkid has been with Gremio since 2019, going from strength to strength while progressing through the ranks in the last half a decade.

While the 16-year-old has yet to break into the first-team squad at Gremio, he turns out for the under-20 team, showing the potential to play well beyond his age group. The youngster has turned out 11 times thus far for Gremio’s under-20 team while chipping in with two goals.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian attacking sensation’s progress at Gremio has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Widespread reports have linked the teenage prospect with Premier League bigwigs, including Chelsea. However, other heavyweights have also shown interest in him.

Chelsea’s interest in Gabriel Mec is understandable. The Blues have been active in the South American market for the brightest young prospects, buying and selling several highly-rated prodigies. In addition, Kendry Paez and Estevao Willian will soon join Chelsea, with the West London club securing an agreement to land them.
