Fabrizio Romano has effectively ruled out a January exit for Frenkie de Jong amid rumours of links to Chelsea and Manchester United.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Frenkie de Jong is expected to stay at Barcelona beyond the January transfer window despite his contractual problems. The midfielder was recently linked with Chelsea and Manchester United. But he is expected to stay in Catalonia beyond the winter window.
No Frenkie de Jong move in January
The Frenkie de Jong situation could attract plenty of attention as the problem evolves. Barcelona are keen to retain the player and is actively looking to extend his deal at the club. However, the midfielder, being one of the highest-paid stars at Barcelona, is in no rush to decide on his future just yet.
De Jong’s current deal expires in 2026, meaning that, should he continue to evade the talk of renewal, some top clubs will begin to sniff around in January or next summer and hope to take advantage of the situation. Considering Barcelona’s financial struggles, a low bid from one of the big clubs could be on the horizon.
Hansi Flick reportedly asked the club to block a summer transfer for the midfielder, as some clubs were circling. The sentiment might stay ahead of the January transfer window, but a few teams will be looking to make their presence felt for the 27-year-old Barcelona star.
Chelsea and Manchester United were recently linked with Frenkie de Jong ahead of the January window. However, Fabrizio Romano has categorically ruled out an exit for the Dutchman from Barcelona in the winter months.
Romano said, “There are no movements expected in January for Frenkie de Jong despite contractual rumours in the Spanish media; it’s completely quiet. There’s nothing in it. He’s still very happy at Barcelona and fully focused on recovering his best form after the injury. All the rest – Chelsea, Man United – is just speculation, nothing else. I repeat, no transfer movements around de Jong.”
De Jong in no rush to leave Barcelona
Despite the club’s efforts for the midfielder, Frenkie de Jong must consider many factors before he decides to extend his contract at Barcelona. There is the financial aspect, as the two parties have had issues in the past, and there is no clarity on whether they owe the player anything from before.
Manchester United had extensive links two years ago. But last summer, de Jong was never really an option for them. The same might be true for Chelsea, who have a different transfer policy regarding player age and other factors. Moreover, the 27-year-old Barcelona star is seemingly happy with life at the club and the city, meaning there is a big possibility for him to extend his stay at some point in the future.
