Atletico Madrid are looking to make a move for the services of Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell when the transfer window reopens in January.
Atletico Madrid want to reinforce their backline at the start of 2025 and according to a report from Fichajes, Diego Simeone’s team are looking to raid Chelsea as they are interested in the services of Ben Chilwell. The English full-back is no longer an important part of Enzo Maresca’s plans and the Spanish outfit are eyeing a bargain move.
Chilwell came up the ranks at Leicester City and made quite a name for himself while playing for their first team. He then made a big-money move to Chelsea in the summer of 2022. While he was an integral part of their plans in the initial years and was their vice-captain last season, the 27-year-old has gone down the pecking order under Maresca.
He has struggled with injuries and more importantly, the Italian manager prefers Marc Cucurella or Levi Colwill ahead of him. He has only played 45 minutes of first-team football this season which came in the EFL Cup. The English international was linked with a move away throughout the summer.
Atletico will once again knock on Chelsea’s door
While his contract runs until the summer of 2027, the Blues did try to get him off their books during the summer and they will be open to a potential departure when the window reopens in January. Atletico Madrid who raided Chelsea for the signature Conor Gallagher during the summer are now looking to make the most out of the Chilwell situation.
Simeone seeks more quality and depth on the left-hand side of his defence. While Reinildo Mandava has been a consistent performer for his team, he is already 30 and his contract runs out at the end of the season. As a result, the Argentine manager is looking to bring Chilwell to the club.
He is confident that the English international could help improve his backline and his experience could come in handy. They will look to make a formal offer when the window reopens. Atletico will try to strike a bargain deal and Chelsea could accept a low offer as the former Leicester defender is surplus to requirements.
