Liverpool are reportedly working to sign Nico Williams next summer, as they view him as a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
According to Fichajes, Liverpool may have identified Nico Williams as the primary replacement for Mohamed Salah. The Merseysiders are reportedly working in the background to figure out a move for the 22-year-old Euro 2024 winner,
Liverpool have plenty on their plate when it comes to sorting out the futures of several of their key first-team stars. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are all out of contracts next summer, with the danger of the trio leaving on a free looming large over Anfield.
Salah will be a particularly huge loss for Liverpool, considering his influence in the squad. Some may argue that the Egyptian singlehandedly drives their chances of a title challenge, meaning losing him for nothing will be a significant loss on the sporting and financial side.
The Saudi Pro League are desperate to land one of the best African players around, and their financial offering to Salah may trump any new contract that Liverpool will come up with. While the Merseysiders are still optimistic the Egyptian would stay, they are also looking out for themselves, as a search for a potential replacement could be underway in the background.
For instance, there’s interest in Leroy Sane as a potential replacement, and now, the report states they are already working in the background to sign Nico Williams. The Athletic Club star is a player of interest for Liverpool, as many other clubs are also lining up a move for the 22-year-old Euro 2024 winner.
Is Williams the right replacement for Salah?
Manchester United and Barcelona are also keen on Williams, as the latter were very close to signing him over in the summer. Liverpool’s interest might have some weight in the market, although to view the 22-year-old Euro 2024 winner as a direct replacement for Salah would make little sense.
Williams plays primarily on the left-hand side, with Salah operating on the opposite flank. While the Spaniard would be a solid addition to the squad, he’s no closer to being a replacement for the Egyptian. Even if Liverpool are keen to add Williams to their squad, they might have to offload Salah first, as paying both their wages would seem a little unsustainable financially.
