Manchester City make decision on Kalvin Phillips after Rodri injury blow

Manchester City on the verge of signing Matija Popovic.

Manchester City have decided against recalling Kalvin Phillips from his loan spell at Ipswich Town despite an injury to Rodri.

According to a report from Football Insider, Manchester City have no plans to cut short Kalvin Phillips’ loan spell. Pep Guardiola’s team have decided against recalling him during the winter break despite the fact that Rodri is all set to be sidelined for a long while after picking up an injury against Arsenal.

Rodri to be out for a long while

Rodri has been one of the mainstays of Guardiola’s team in recent seasons. He has played a key part in all the success they have had. The 28-year-old was struggling with a hamstring issue in the initial phase of the new season and the Spanish manager decided to slowly ease him back into action.

But things haven’t gone according to plan as he has picked a major injury during his first Premier League start of the season. The Spanish international tore his anterior cruciate ligament just 21 minutes into the game against Arsenal and now he is all set to be on the sidelines for a long while.

City do have Mateo Kovačić in their ranks and he can surely help cope with his absence but they lack depth in that area. As a result, Guardiola and his team are drawing up plans to bring in an ideal replacement.

City make decision on recalling Kalvin Phillips

Several reports have suggested that they could look to bring Kalvin Phillips back to the club. The English defensive midfielder was signed back in 2022 as a backup to Rodri. While City forked out a significant fee to acquire his services from Leeds, the move hasn’t worked out for either party.

After a disappointing loan spell at West Ham United during the second half of last season, Phillips ended up joining newly promoted Ipswich in hopes of getting his career back on track. He seems all set to have an important role under Kieran McKenna.

The injury to Rodri has forced City to think about cutting short his loan spell and recalling him during January. But, the Manchester-based club have decided against it. They are not looking to have him in their squad as he doesn’t fit into Guardiola’s plans. They will hope he has a successful loan spell at Ipswich and they manage to get him off their books permanently next summer.
