Arsenal will pursue 25-year-old Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi if Thomas Partey departs from the Emirates next summer.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Arsenal might part ways with Thomas Partey in the summer transfer window. So, Martin Zubimendi has emerged as a target for the North London club as they scour the market for a long-term replacement. The Real Sociedad midfielder is also the subject of interest from Liverpool.
The Martin Zubimendi story
Martin Zubimendi has established himself as one of the best midfielders in La Liga since breaking into the first-team squad at Real Sociedad a few years ago. The Spaniard was not a teenage sensation and had to bide his time before making his senior bow for the Basque outfit.
However, the 25-year-old has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for La Real since breaking into the first-team squad at the Reale Arena. Zubimendi has turned out nearly 200 times thus far for Real Sociedad while chipping in with nine goals and seven assists.
The Spanish midfielder has also risen in prominence in his national side and played his part as Spain won the UEFA Euro 2024 title. Meanwhile, Martin Zubimendi’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. However, his next destination might be the Premier League, with Arsenal and Liverpool vying for his signature.
Premier League beckons?
Liverpool came close to signing Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window before a move failed to materialise. The Spaniard snubbed the Merseyside outfit, as he wanted to remain in Spain for another season. However, recent reports have claimed he regrets rejecting the opportunity to join Liverpool.
Meanwhile, the Spanish international has been on Arsenal’s radar for a long time. The Gunners are scouring the market for a holding midfielder amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Thomas Partey. With the 31-year-old closing in on leaving Arsenal as a free agent, Zubimendi has emerged as a viable target.
Arsenal and Liverpool should have the funds to afford a deal worth €60 million to sign Zubimendi. It will be interesting to see if the 25-year-old warms up to the idea of moving to the Premier League or if he remains in Spain next year.
