Crystal Palace are considering making a move for the services of Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell when the transfer window reopens in January.
Ben Chilwell’s future was a big talking point throughout the summer transfer window. With the English international, who arrived from Leicester City in a £50 million deal, surplus to requirements, Chelsea were keen on offloading him.
However, they could not find him a new home in the summer, although according to a report from The Sun, Crystal Palace have emerged as a potential destination for the former Leicester City defender. The Eagles want to reinforce their defence, and they are looking at Chilwell as an option to reinforce their backline in the winter.
Chilwell is not in the plans of Enzo Maresca
The 27-year-old was the Chelsea vice-captain last season, and he even wore the captain’s armband in the absence of Reece James. But, the arrival of Enzo Maresca has seen the 27-year-old go down the pecking order.
While he still has three years left on his deal at Stamford Bridge, Chilwell is no longer an important part of their plans, and the Blues were keen on offloading him this past summer. The English full-back was on the verge of leaving the London club, but they couldn’t find him a new club.
The former Leicester City defender has been reinstated in their first-team following a failed summer move. But, Marc Cucurella, Renato Veiga, and Levi Colwill are ahead of him in the pecking order. Chilwell is concerned about the lack of game time at the West London club, and he is open to a move away from the club when the window reopens in January.
Chilwell could join Crystal Palace in January?
While the Blues offloaded quite a few of their players in the summer to trim their squad, they still have a lot of players who are surplus requirements and Chilwell is one of them. The 27-year-old is on massive wages, and his departure could be a huge boost for the London club.
Crystal Palace are well aware of his situation at Stamford Bridge, and they are ready to offer him a way out. The Eagles want to reinforce their backline, they want more quality on the left flank and consider Chilwell to be a great option to bolster their squad. Palace are tracking the Chelsea misfit, and they could knock on the doors of the London club in January to try and prise Chilwell away from the club.
