Manchester United considering Unai Simon swoop

Manchester United are reportedly mulling over a move to sign 27-year-old Spanish international Unai Simon from Athletic Club next year.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Unai Simon is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are weighing up reinforcing their goalkeeping options next year. So, the 27-year-old Athletic Club shot-stopper has emerged as a target, with the Premier League heavyweights ready to invest a considerable sum to land the UEFA Euro 2024 winner in 2025.

The rise and rise of Unai Simon

Unai Simon has been one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga since breaking into the first-team squad at Athletic Club several years ago. A native of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Spaniard spent his formative years in his homeland and has been with Athletic Club since 2011, arriving from CD Aurrera de Vitoria.

However, the 27-year-old had to bide his time to become the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper after making his first-team bow at the onset of the 2018/19 season. Simon has been the primary pick between the sticks for the Basque outfit for half a decade, turning out nearly 200 times while keeping 66 clean sheets and conceding 202 goals.

Simon has been the first-choice goalkeeper for Spain for several years and was a fixture between the sticks as La Roja won the UEFA Euro 2024 title this past summer. Meanwhile, the Spanish international’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including Manchester United.

Manchester United interested in Simon

Manchester United’s interest in Unai Simon is somewhat surprising but understandable. Andre Onana has been the first-choice goalkeeper for the Premier League heavyweights, with Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton being his backups. However, Onana has been error-prone since arriving from Inter Milan last summer.

So, it is understandable why Manchester United might mull over reinforcing the goalkeeping department next year. The report has suggested that the Red Devils are ready to invest a considerable sum to land the 27-year-old Spaniard in 2025.

The UEFA Euro 2024 winner can be a solid addition to the Manchester United squad, considering his shot-stopping ability and proficiency with the ball at his feet. It will be interesting to see if the Spanish international moves to Old Trafford next year.
