Liverpool still monitoring Martin Zubimendi despite failed summer move

Liverpool remain interested in Martin Zubimendi despite failing to secure the midfielder’s signature this summer, with Real Madrid also keen.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, Liverpool will continue to monitor Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi ahead of a potential move in 2025. The Reds had identified him as their priority target for the summer, and they were working hard to secure his services before a deal failed to materialise.

The move collapsed as the player decided to continue at his childhood club, even as Liverpool were ready to cough up around £51 million to secure his services. Despite receiving a major setback in their pursuit, the Merseyside club retain their interest in him. They are planning to knock on the doors of the Spanish outfit next year.

Martin Zubimendi has come up the ranks at Real Sociedad, and he has been a part of their first team setup since 2020. The 25-year-old has established himself as one of their mainstays and his performances have not gone unnoticed. After an impressive campaign with his childhood club, the defensive midfielder played a part in Spain’s triumph at UEFA Euro 2024.

Martin Zubimendi turned down a move to Liverpool

Martin Zubimendi’s impressive performances resulted in interest from quite a few top clubs and Liverpool had him at the top of their wishlist. While Zubimendi still has three years left on his deal, there is a release clause worth around £51 million which could have led to his departure.

The Reds pushed hard for his signature as Arne Slot was confident that the 25-year-old could prove to be an exceptional signing for them. While Martin Zubimendi was keen on making a move to the Premier League, he decided against it at the very end as he did not want to offend important people at his childhood club.

The Reds retain interest in Zubimendi

While the Merseyside club did fail in the summer, they have not given up on their top target yet and are preparing to return for his services in the near future. The presence of a £51 million release clause in his deal suggests Real Sociedad are unlikely to have any say on his future.

Despite Martin Zubimendi snubbing the opportunity to move to Anfield, Liverpool continue to keep tabs on him and will most likely return for him in 2025. But, they could face competition from Real Madrid, who are also interested in the Spanish international.

Los Blancos want a new defensive midfielder to further bolster their squad. While Real Madrid have been linked with Manchester City’s Rodri of late, signing the Spaniard could be a very difficult task, and they could instead reignite their interest in Zubimendi.
