Liverpool and Newcastle United remain determined to secure the services of Sporting CP defensive sensation Goncalo Inacio.
Liverpool and Newcastle United were both keen on signing Goncalo Inacio in the recently concluded transfer window. They might not have managed to strike a deal for the Portuguese defenders but according to a report from CaughtOffside, both Premier League outfits retain their interest in the Sporting CP defensive sensation and are likely to revisit their pursuit of the player in the near future.
Inacio has come up the ranks at the Portuguese club and has only gone from strength to strength since getting promoted to their first team back in 2020. He is already a mainstay at Sporting and has been a constant feature in the national team in recent times.
Liverpool & Newcastle were both keen on signing Inacio
While his contract runs until the summer of 2027, there has been a significant amount of interest in his services. Liverpool and Newcastle were both interested in signing him during the summer.
The Magpies were keen on defensive reinforcement because of injuries to Sven Botman and skipper Jamaal Lascelles. Eddie Howe wanted to bring in a world-class defender and Inacio was one of the names on their wishlist.
Liverpool were also keen on signing the 23-year-old. The Reds wanted to strengthen their backline by signing another centre-back and had earmarked it as a top priority for the summer. But, they ultimately decided against it.
Inacio is appreciated by people at the Merseyside club and they were ready to prise him away from Sporting. But, one of the primary reasons why the transfer didn’t happen was his high release clause.
Both Premier League clubs could return for Inacio
The Portuguese outfit were not ready to accept anything lower than his €60 million release clause. The figure proved too steep for the Reds as well as the Magpies. While they did drop their interest in his services back then, both clubs could return for his signature in the near future.
With Joel Matip’s departure, Liverpool will have to bring in a new left-sided centre-back and Inacio is quite high on their wishlist. Despite the high release clause they could soon revisit their interest if their defensive needs become more urgent.
