Manchester City secure agreement to sign Christian McFarlane, beat Arsenal to deal

Manchester City have reportedly secured an agreement for teenage full-back Christian McFarlane from NYCFC ahead of the summer of 2025.

According to HITC, Manchester City have agreed a deal with NYCFC for teenage full-back Christian McFarlane. The 17-year-old MLS full-back sensation has been on their radar for quite a while and even during the summer, as City beat big competition from rivals.

Manchester City to sign Christian McFarlane

Manchester City had a relatively quiet window, which has not been the standard set during the many years operating at the top. In truth, the squad did not need too much surgery to bring in numerous players, as Girona’s Savinho was the only big arrival apart from Ilkay Gundogan, who returned to the club after a year at Barcelona.

There were a few notable outgoings in the form of Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo, and Manchester City did not find suitable profiles to replace the duo. Even without a whole lot of signings to come in, the club have had a fine start to the season, winning their opening three games with relative ease.

However, the club are planning to bring in some exciting profiles for the future and had an interest in Christian McFarlane from New York City FC. The MLS-based sister club of Manchester City and part of the City Football Group has agreed on a deal with their American counterparts to bring the 17-year-old full-back sensation ahead of the summer window of 2025.

With the two clubs part of the same ecosystem, it has been a somewhat more accessible road to bring one of the promising players with relative ease. McFarlane will hope to see enough first-team action when he arrives. However, he will have to go through a considerable period of development before making a breakthrough into the first team.

Manchester City beat big competition for McFarlane

While some may argue that Manchester City might have found it easier to negotiate with a fellow City Football Group club for McFarlane, in truth, they reportedly faced big competition. Arsenal were one of the teams keen on the 17-year-old MLS full-back sensation.

Other teams included Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich for the teenager, as Manchester City reign supreme in the chase. The player will arrive in 2025 and will continue to play in the MLS until then.
