Turkish outfit Fenerbahce are reportedly keen on signing 27-year-old out-of-favour Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell this summer.
According to a report from the TEAMtalk, Chelsea have been contacted by European outfit Fenerbahce regarding a move for Ben Chilwell. The Englishman joined Chelsea from Leicester City for a fee of around £45 million, but he has not been able to live up to the expectations.
Ben Chilwell does not have a future at Chelsea
The 27-year-old left-back has had persistent injury problems, and it is no surprise that Chelsea are looking to get rid of him. He is not the first-choice left-back at the club anymore, and the England international will not want to sit on the bench.
Newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca has already confirmed that Ben Chilwell does not have a future at the club, and he should look to move on. It remains to be seen whether he is keen on a move to Turkiye. Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is currently the manager of the Turkish club, and it will be interesting to see if he can use his contact that Chelsea to get the deal done.
Fenerbahce move would be ideal for Chilwell
Chilwell needs to play regularly to get back to his best. If Chelsea cannot provide him with that opportunity, it would make sense for him to move on permanently. There is unlikely to be shortage of suitors for a player of his quality. If he can get over his injury problems, he could become one of the best full-backs in the country. It remains to be seen where he ends up.
Meanwhile, Chilwell has been linked with Manchester United as well. The Red Devils could use a quality left-back to support Luke Shaw, and Chilwell would have been an exceptional acquisition for them. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce will look to do well in the Turkish Super Lig this season and compete for major trophies.
Signing a quality defender like Chilwell will not only help them improve defensively, it would also add a new dimension to their attack. If Chelsea failed to get rid of permanently, a loan move would be beneficial as well. If he manages to impress in Turkiye, Chelsea could sell him for a respectable fee next summer.
