Reiss Nelson set to join Fulham on loan

Reiss Nelson will join Fulham on a season-long loan deal folliwn g a late twist in the saga for the Arsenal winger.

According to The Athletic, Fulham are on the verge of signing Reiss Nelson in a season-long loan deal following a late twist. The 24-year-old Arsenal attacker was inching closer to joining ahead of the final minutes of the transfer deadline before the Cottagers swooped in.

Fulham swoop in for Reiss Nelson

If there are any record-keeping in the time taken to complete a transfer, Fulham’s move for Reiss Nelson must be studied. The Cottagers did ponder a late move for the winger a few days earlier, although they had a different target in mind.

Lyon’s Ernest Nuamah was their primary target, although the move collapsed in the dying hours of deadline day. In the midst of the loss, Fulham saw a late opportunity with Nelson and made their move for the 24-year-old Arsenal attacker.

Ipswich Town were in advanced talks to sign Nelson, and at one stage, the winger seemed destined to join Kieran McKenna’s side. With that move falling through, Fulham submitted a deal sheet just in time to get this deal over the line and buy a couple of hours to get the formalities in place.

Barring another late twist, Fulham will sign the 24-year-old on a season-long loan, although more details about the transaction might shed new light on further inclusions in the contract. Whether the deal has a buy option or obligation remains to be seen, but Nelson will be a Fulham player and joins former Gunners Emile Smith-Rowe, Alex Iwobi and Bernd Leno.

Arsenal made a late decision on Nelson

While Arsenal were open to late offers, any exit for Nelson was contingent on them signing a new forward. With the Gunners bringing in Raheem Sterling on a loan deal from Chelsea, they allowed the 24-year-old homegrown star to leave.

Nelson had been evaluating his options this summer, as he has suffered from a lack of regular minutes under Mikel Arteta. Fulham had wanted a new winger following the exits of Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Willian, as Marco Silva will be pleased with the acquisition of the Arsenal star.
