Arsenal set to sign Raheem Sterling from Chelsea

Arsenal have reached a late agreement with Chelsea to sign Raheem Sterling on a season-long loan move without any option or buy obligation.

Fabrizio Romano’s ‘Here We Go‘ confirms Arsenal have completed the acquisition of Raheem Sterling from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal. The 29-year-old forward had no place at Stamford Bridge for the current season, as Mikel Arteta has taken the chance to reunite with a player he knows very well to solve the attacking depth issue with his squad.

Arsenal sign Raheem Sterling

The transfer window on deadline appeared dead and over a few hours ago, only for it to come back to life and with some vigour. A transfer domino fell, which allowed the market to open up, as three potential deals in the offing are inter-connected.

Arsenal opened talks with Chelsea for Raheem Sterling, as the Gunners were pondering about signing an attacker before the window shut. The departure of Eddie Nketiah and the overall need for a winger all summer long had put the Gunners in an opportunistic position as Sterling became available.

Arsenal ensured they had an agreement on personal terms with the winger before heading into concrete talks with Chelsea. The two clubs have not found an agreement on a season-long loan deal that does not come with a buy option or obligation. The nature of the deals means the 29-year-old will return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Sterling is a tremendous signing for Arsenal in the context of their season, as Mikel Arteta got a player that not only improves the attacking setup but also adds to the depth. Reiss Nelson has also departed the club, which meant they needed a new player in the attacking third, and the 29-year-old Chelsea forward is the man for it.

Arsenal a necessary upgrade for Sterling

Some may argue that Sterling wasn’t the performer for Chelsea as he was with Manchester City, although there are varied reasons for this. The Blues did not offer a conducive environment for many players to thrive, although the 29-year-old’s numbers are still decent.

Meanwhile, joining Arsenal, albeit for a single season, will be seen as an upgrade of sorts by Chelsea in the context of his career. When he debuts for the Gunners, he will have played for Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and the north Londoners, which does represent a stellar career the winger has had.
