Arsenal have opened talks for taking Raheem Sterling on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea, with personal terms yet to be agreed upon.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Arsenal have opened talks with Chelsea over a late move for Raheem Sterling. The 29-year-old rival star is free to leave Stamford Bridge following his omission from the first-team squad, and now the Gunners are keen on taking him on loan for the current season.
Arsenal to sign Raheem Sterling?
There have been rumblings about Arsenal’s potential move for Raheem Sterling on deadline day, with the chance now opening up for all parties concerned. A while ago, a move for the winger to north London was potentially ruled out, but things have returned on track.
Sterling was banished from first-team action since the arrival of new boss Enzo Maresca and had been training separately ever since. He still has three years to run on his Chelsea contract that fetches high wages, something the club were willing to get rid of. Arsenal were understood to have initiated discussions earlier today, but without concluding whether they are eager to sign him.
While Chelsea have tried to find a solution, Arsenal have now opened talks to take Sterling on a season-long loan deal. The move does not come with any option or buy obligation, as this is a dry loan for the current campaign.
Personal terms are yet to be agreed upon, and as per earlier reports, Sterling reportedly preferred a switch to the Gunners, which remains the case. The 29-year-old rival star is keen to get back on tractk and will have the chance to compete for trophies once again under Mikel Arteta, whom he knows from the time spent at former side Manchester City.
Fabrizio Romano updated that there’s an agreement between Arsenal and Sterling on terms. He insists that the move is ready for a green light from the player’s side in case the Gunners and Chelsea find a late agreement.
Sterling will add attacking depth to Arsenal
Following the agreement to sell Eddie Nketiah, Arsenal have felt they are a man short in their attacking setup, and had wanted a winger all summer long. The arrival of Sterling will solve that issue, as Arteta can have a reliable player to use in his squad.
Sterling can play on the left wing, as well as on the right side, while he has also been used in the false-nine role previously. Hence, the versatility of the 29-year-old will provide Arteta will plenty of options to tinker with as Arsenal head into what could be a long season, challenging on all fronts.
