Chelsea ponder late move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Chelsea might pursue 27-year-old Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin late in the summer transfer window if a deal for Victor Osimhen does not see the light of day.

According to a report by The Sun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are keen on signing a striker before the summer transfer window shuts down, with Victor Osimhen their top target. However, the Napoli attacker’s £500,000-a-week wage demands are forcing the West London club to look elsewhere, with the 27-year-old Everton forward emerging as an alternative.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and his career so far

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has seen his stock drop in the last few years. The Englishman was once among the best young strikers in the Premier League, alerting high-profile clubs across the country. However, his fitness issues have stunted his progress, significantly restricting his game time while reducing his output.

The 27-year-old has turned out nearly 250 times thus far for Everton while chipping in with 68 goals and 18 assists. However, Calvert-Lewin faces an uncertain future at Goodison Park after entering the final 12 months of his contract with the Merseyside outfit.

Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known Premier League clubs. Recent reports have linked the England international with English bigwigs like Manchester United and Newcastle United. He is also a target for Chelsea.

London calling?

Chelsea’s interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin is surprising yet understandable. The Blues have left it too late to sign a recognised striker, although Victor Osimhen remains their priority target. However, a few factors complicate Chelsea’s chase of the Nigerian international, including his release clause of £110 million.

In addition, Osimhen wants to earn £500,000-a-week wages if he joins Chelsea in the summer transfer window. Recent reports have also claimed that the Napoli striker and Chelsea differ on the structure of a prospective summer deal. So, the West London outfit might need to look elsewhere for a new striker.

Calvert-Lewin has thus emerged as a candidate to bolster Chelsea’s offensive department, although he is a considerable downgrade on Osimhen. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Blues can seal the deal to secure Victor Osimhen’s services before this week’s summer transfer deadline.
