Arsenal are yet to make a concrete move to sign Nico Williams despite being linked with the Athletic Club star throughout the summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are not in active negotiations with Athletic Club for the services of Spanish attacking sensation Nico Williams. While Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of the young winger and his team have been linked with him since the start of the window, the Gunners are yet to make a move for his signature.
Williams has been a part of the Spanish outfit since his childhood days. He came up the ranks at some pace and has been a part of their first team since the summer of 2021. At just 22, he is already a mainstay in the team and his consistent performances have attracted significant interest in the recent past.
The Spanish international contributed towards 27 goals (8 goals, 19 assists) last season and he went on to play a pivotal role in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024 with two goals and an assist. Since the end of the continental tournament, he has been linked with a move to Barcelona.
While he still has three years left on his deal, there is a £48 million release clause in his contract that could lead to his departure. The Catalan giants were closing in on his signature but that move hasn’t gone through and Bilbao have handed Williams the number 10 shirt which suggests he is all set to continue at the club.
Apart from Barcelona, Arsenal are another club who have been constantly linked with the 22-year-old. The Gunners are big admirers of the youngster and their manager Mikel Arteta is an even bigger fan of the player. While they are well stacked on the left flank, Williams’ potential suggests he could still be an exceptional signing for them.
Arsenal are not making moves to sign Nico Williams
But, according to Fabrizio Romano, the North London club are not in negotiations with Athletic Club for the Spanish winger’s services. The Italian transfer expert feels Williams is all set to continue at his childhood club despite being linked with a move away throughout the summer.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “What I’m hearing as of tonight is there’s nothing concrete,”
“The expectation of those close to Nico Williams and Athletic Bilbao is for him to continue there.
“Arsenal appreciate Nico Williams but all top clubs in Europe do. Mikel Arteta is a big fan of him but as of tonight, there are no active negotiations.”
Despite being huge admirers of the 22-year-old winger, there is nothing going on between the two clubs regarding a potential transfer. With the deadline day closing in, the expectation is that the player stays at his club for another season. But, since there is a £48 million release clause in his deal nothing can be guaranteed.
