Napoli officials have travelled to London to hold discussions with Chelsea regarding a potential transfer for Romelu Lukaku.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Napoli have finally decided to put their foot on the accelerator and complete the signing of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker has already made up his mind, he wants to reunite with Antonio Conte and officials from the Naples-based club have travelled to London to strike a deal with Chelsea.
Lukaku’s return to the London club hasn’t gone according to plan. He has spent the last two seasons out on loan. After his big-money move from Inter Milan didn’t work out, he returned to the Italian outfit on a season-long loan before joining AS Roma last season.
The 31-year-old might have failed to fire at Chelsea but he did do a great job in Italy last time out. The Belgian international was involved in a total of 47 matches, he scored 21 goals and even bagged four assists. While he is back at his parent club and still has two years left on his deal, the London club do not consider him to be a part of their project.
They have been looking for ways to get him off their books. Quite a few clubs have been linked with Lukaku but nothing concrete has happened so far. However, it seems Napoli has decided to take the initiative. They are preparing for life without Victor Osimhen and Conte feels the former Inter Milan striker could help them cope with his absence.
Napoli step up interest to sign Lukaku
They have already held talks with the player and he is absolutely convinced about playing under Conte again. He is waiting for Napoli to make the move. While the Naples-based club are yet to figure out the future of Osimhen, they have decided to go ahead and sign Lukaku first.
Conte is not interested in playing the waiting game anymore. He seeks more firepower and Napoli have decided to take the necessary steps. They will focus on finding Osimhen a new club after completing the signing of Lukaku.
The Italian club had already sent an official bid on Monday and their officials have travelled to London today to hold talks with representatives of Chelsea. While their bid hasn’t been accepted yet, it is being discussed alongside other terms and conditions. Napoli seem to be edging closer to an agreement with the Blues.
