Liverpool looking to beat Atletico Madrid to Piero Hincapie

Liverpool are looking to leapfrog Atletico Madrid in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen defensive sensation Piero Hincapie.

According to a report from Fichajes, Liverpool are looking to reinforce their backline before the end of the transfer window and they have their eyes set on Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie. Atletico Madrid are also keen on the signature of the defensive sensation but the Reds are looking streal a march on them.

Hincapie has had an impressive rise since joining the German club in the summer of 2021. While the 22-year-old prefers playing in the heart of the defence, he is well capable of playing as a left-sided full-back or a wing-back. His consistent performances, huge potential and versatility haven’t gone unnoticed and quite a few clubs are keen on signing him.

Atletico Madrid keen on signing Piero Hincapie

While the Ecuadorian international still has three years left on his deal at Leverkusen, top clubs are looking to lure him away on the back of his sensational performances in their Bundesliga-winning campaign last season.

Atletico Madrid are one of the clubs that have been quite busy in the ongoing transfer window. They have already signed Robin Le Normand, Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth.

Le Normand’s arrival does help cope with the absence of Mario Hermoso but Diego Simeone is still looking for more quality and depth at the back. He is interested in the versatile Hincapier who seems to have huge potential. They have entered the race for his signature and are ready to challenge Liverpool for his signature.

While they will surely provide tough competition to the Reds, Atletico have already spent a fortune and they might struggle to compete with the Premier League outfit in terms of finances. Liverpool are yet to make a signing this summer.

Liverpool to take the lead

They were looking to strengthen their midfield by signing Martin Zubimendi but that deal is now off and they seem to have shifted their attention towards bringing in a replacement for Joel Matip who left the club upon the expiry of his contract.

They consider the Leverkusen youngster to be an ideal fit for Arne Slot’s system. The Reds are looking to take the lead in the race of his services and are considered to be in a strong position to complete his signing.

But, they are not going to find it easy to strike a deal with Leverkusen as their manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that he wants Hincapie in his squad at all costs. While the German manager is trying his best to keep hold of his star defender, the player will most likely have the final call.
