Newcastle United are looking to hijack Atletico Madrid’s move for Chelsea academy graduate Conor Gallagher.
According to a report from Fichajes, Newcastle United are interested in acquiring the services of Conor Gallagher. The English international was closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid but things haven’t worked out and now the Magpies are looking to hijack the deal in an attempt to reinforce their midfield.
Move to Atletico collapses, Newcastle enter the race
Gallagher’s future has been up in the air for a long time. In the initial phase of the window, Tottenham were keen on his signature. But they couldn’t strike a deal with Chelsea and it gave Diego Simeone’s team a clear path to his signature.
The Madrid-based club were involved in long-drawn negotiations with Chelsea as well as Gallagher. They managed to reach an agreement with both parties and the 24-year-old had successfully undergone his medical. But, the move didn’t go through and it has unexpectedly collapsed.
Samu Omorodion’s failed transfer to Chelsea is the reason behind the failure of Gallagher’s transfer. With Atletico failing to get it done, Newcastle United have entered the race for his services. The Magpies were not at their best last season and they seek more quality to help them return to Europe competitions in the future.
Eddie Howe would love to have someone with Gallagher’s experience and composure in the centre of the park. With Atletico’s move stalling, the Magpies have the perfect opportunity to make it count. They have been keeping a close eye on his situation and could soon table an offer for him.
Gallagher to stay at Stamford Bridge?
Gallagher finds himself in a weird position with regard to his future after the move to Simeone’s team didn’t go through despite his travelling to Spain to complete it.
With just 12 months left on his deal, Chelsea still prefer cashing in on the English international. They do not want to lose out on him for free. While reports suggest that they are still open to discussing a new deal, a departure looks the most likely outcome.
Funds raised from his departure will significantly help them in terms of Financial Fair Play regulations as he represents pure profit because of being an academy graduate. With Chelsea still open to his departure, it will be interesting to see how the Magpies fair with an attempt to hijack Atletico’s deal.
