Arsenal are optimistic about striking a deal with Real Sociedad for the signature of their midfield general Mikel Merino.
According to a report from Football Insider, Arsenal are confident about securing the services of Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino. The Gunners want to reinforce their midfield and are in talks with the Spanish club to complete the Spanish midfielder signing.
Merino joined Sociedad back in 2018 from Newcastle. While things didn’t work out for him in the Premier League last time out, he seems all set to return to England. The Spanish international had an exceptional season last time out as he scored eight goals and bagged five assists in his 45 outings. He even played an important part in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024.
But, with less than a year left on his deal, Merino seems all set for a move away from Sociedad. While the Spanish club were keen on extending his stay and they were ready to offer him a bumper new deal, the player has his heart set on a move away and is expected to leave the club before the end of the window.
Arsenal optimistic about signing Mikel Merino
Reports suggested that Martin Zubimendi’s potential move to Liverpool could cause problems for Arsenal. With the 25-year-old closing in on a move to the Merseyside club, there were concerns that Sociedad could block Merino’s exit. But those worries have been put to rest.
The Spanish club look all set to lose out on two of their best players for last season. Mikel Arteta is looking for a new number six with question marks over Thomas Partey’s availability and Jorinho is unlikely to be used in a deeper role.
While Merino also prefers playing as a central midfielder, he is well capable of forming a great partnership with Declan Rice as double pivots. The Gunners have already held talks with the player and he has given his green light to the move.
The North London club continue to hold talks with Sociedad as they look to reach a full agreement for his transfer. Arsenal are confident about completing the deal soon with the player also pushing for it.
