Bashir Humphreys is set to leave Chelsea this summer, either on loan or permanently, and Leeds United are interested in the defender.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Bashir Humphreys is set to leave Chelsea, with a preference for a permanent deal away from Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old homegrown player is not short of interested suitors, although Leeds United are considered one of the key parties in this race.
Bashir Humphreys set for Chelsea exit
Chelsea are currently stacked with central defenders, and a few departures from the first team are a big possibility before the summer window shuts. For instance, there’s a massive chance that Trevoh Chalobah will leave, while new boss Enzo Maresca has yet to confirm his starting pair ahead of the season opener against Manchester City next weekend.
One other player, 21-year-old homegrown Bashir Humphreys, does not have a future in that first team, with Chelsea now actively looking to offload him in this window. The young defender has already shown plenty of promise with his loan spell at Swansea last season.
He had hoped those mature and professional performances for the Welsh side might have given him a platform ahead of the new season. However, the situation at Chelsea, especially for homegrown stars and defenders, looks a bit messy at the moment, meaning he will have no chance to break into Maresca’s side.
Chelsea are looking to sell him permanently, although they will also consider loan approaches for the promising defender. They will prioritise making a profit from his sale rather than risk keeping him on their books, although his current wages do not necessarily create a burden.
Leeds United strongest suitor for Humphreys
Leeds United are strongly considering a move for Humphreys and will have the financial means to make the deal happen. There are some requirements in terms of defensive depth at Elland Road, as the 21-year-old homegrown player could fulfil one of the roles.
Humphreys also has other interested parties, such as Championship side Burnley, while a few Bundesliga sides are also showing interest. With the player prioritising regular game time and progressing in his career, a move to Leeds United would make more sense than the other suitors.
