Liverpool keep their options open for the defensive midfield position as they have added Manchester United-linked Manu Kone to the list.
According to Give Me Sport, Liverpool is targeting an array of options for the defensive midfield role, with Manu Kone the latest to emerge on their list. The Borussia Monchengladbach man is widely expected to leave the German side, and Manchester United are also keeping close tabs on his situation.
Liverpool to target Manu Kone?
Liverpool have spent most of the window in the background, waiting quietly to pounce on their preferred targets. It’s still unclear which positions Arne Slot would want to strengthen, although their recent movements increasingly point towards bringing in a critical defensive midfielder.
Martin Zubimendi is their priority target as things stand, but there are doubts that the Spaniard does not want to leave Real Sociedad. Hence, Liverpool are keeping their options open, as they have several other names on their list including Morten Frendrup and Manu Kone.
Sticking with the latter, Borussia Monchengladbach was also linked with the Merseysiders last summer, but an early-season injury might have scuppered any move. He has already been offered to many teams, including Liverpool, who are now contemplating a move for the 23-year-old Bundesliga star.
Kone is not an out-and-out defensive midfielder but can play there with ease. He’s more of a combative style player who can also play in the advanced role. His tenacity in midfield does give room for development in a specialised position, which might suit Liverpool. However, the decision will be with Arne Slot on whether he wants such a profile or a readymade holding midfielder in this window.
Manchester United are keen on Kone
Liverpool and Manchester United’s paths could cross for more than one midfield target, as the Red Devils are also keen on Kone. The 23-year-old Bundesliga star does suit what Erik ten Hag wants from the position with his combative style, although, like Liverpool, they too are placing their fingers on multiple targets.
After talks for Manuel Ugarte stalled, they are linked with several options, including Liverpool target Sander Berge. Some reports suggested Manchester United are not chasing Youssouf Fofana, but recent stories indicate they are indeed chasing the Frenchman, among other targets.
