Ben Sheaf on Manchester United radar

Ben Sheaf is being suggested as a transfer idea for Manchester United, with the club now considering cheaper alternatives to main targets.

Chris Winterburn has claimed that Manchester United should consider a low-cost midfielder alternative compared to their other, more expensive first-choice targets. He named former Arsenal man and current Coventry City star Ben Sheaf while suggesting that INEOS had the 26-year-old midfielder profiled earlier at the Championship club.

Ben Sheaf to Manchester United?

Journalist Chris Winterburn thinks Manchester United could face difficulties in landing a major midfielder, having spent a significant amount of money in other positions. They had been chasing Manuel Ugarte, but that move has stalled as they do not wish to match PSG’s asking price for the Uruguayan.

The widespread suggestion is that they are re-evaluating their position in the market before bringing a big midfielder to the squad. Manchester United may have to sell first before they can put any money back into the market, and a low-cost alternative might be considered as things stand.

Winterburn insists they could potentially look at Coventry City star Ben Sheaf. The 26-year-old midfielder is a low-cost option in the current market. The journalist points out the midfielder’s homegrown status and future re-sale potential should the experiment fail to reap the rewards.

He also insists that INEOS had profiled the 26-year-old midfielder earlier and could return with an approach if they are keen on adding to their squad. How much he will realistically cost remains to be seen, with Ipswich Town and Fulham showing an interest earlier. He could still come to the Premier League regardless of whether Manchester United make a move for him.

Manchester United’s midfield situation

Ahead of the summer, there was a lot of chatter about cashing in on Casemiro and using the funds to reinvest in the area. They have actively chased Ugarte this summer, but the move seems unlikely after recent updates. Sofyan Amrabat is keen to re-join, and Manchester United could still return to the table to re-negotiate with Fiorentina over fresh terms to bring him on the cheap.

They are also keen on Sander Berge, with the midfielder available on the cheap and recently featuring on Liverpool’s radar. Either way, Manchester United might look at a more affordable alternative to their midfield if they cannot find solutions to some of their stars like Casemiro or Scott McTominay, as the new, low-cost midfielder might be a squad option at best.
