Tottenham Hotspur considered signing Yan Couto from Manchester City before the Premier League champions sold him for €25 million to Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
According to a report by Sport BILD, as relayed by Sport Witness, Yan Couto was the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants were ready to launch the offensive to sign the Manchester City prospect in the summer transfer window. However, the Premier League champions have agreed to sell the Brazilian international to Borussia Dortmund for €25 million.
The Yan Couto story
Yan Couto will end his Manchester City spell without establishing a foothold in the first-team squad at the Etihad. A native of Curitiba, the youngster spent his formative years in his homeland before Manchester City snapped him in July 2020.
Since then, the 22-year-old has spent three years with Girona and one season with SC Braga. Yan Couto’s second loan spell with Girona saw him grow exponentially, as he helped the Catalan outfit shock the football world and finish third in La Liga. The young full-back turned out nearly 100 times for Girona while chipping in with five goals and 17 assists.
Meanwhile, Yan Couto’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Tottenham Hotspur also considered signing the Brazilian international from Manchester City in the summer transfer window.
Tottenham tried signing Couto
Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Yan Couto is understandable. While Pedro Porro has been excellent for the North London club since arriving from Sporting CP, they will likely part ways with Emerson Royal in the coming weeks, with AC Milan reportedly closing in on securing the services of the Brazilian international.
Couto thus emerged as a viable target for Tottenham. However, they did not make much headway after the initial interest, with Borussia Dortmund winning the race to secure the young full-back’s services in a deal worth €25 million. With Couto closing in on joining the Bundesliga club, Tottenham must look elsewhere.
Recent reports have linked the North London club with several right-backs as Emerson inches closer to joining AC Milan. It will be interesting to see who replaces the Brazilian, with his compatriot moving to the Bundesliga for around €25 million.
