Barcelona poised to agree loan-to-buy deal to sign Joao Cancelo

Barcelona and Manchester City have reportedly sealed a general agreement over a loan-to-buy deal for Joao Cancelo worth around €25 million.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Joao Cancelo is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants are keen on re-signing the Manchester City wide player on another loan deal in the summer transfer window. And they have secured an agreement with the Premier League champions, with a loan-to-buy deal worth around €25 million on the cards.

Joao Cancelo and his struggles

Joao Cancelo is eager to find a stable footing in his career after spending the last 18 months away from Manchester City on two loan spells. His first temporary departure came in January 2023 after a run-in with Pep Guardiola, meaning he has played his final game for Manchester City.

Barcelona signed him on a season-long loan deal last summer, and Cancelo was exceptional throughout the 2023/24 season. The 30-year-old turned out 42 times for the Blaugrana while chipping in with four goals and five assists. So, it is hardly surprising that the Catalan giants want to bring Cancelo back to the club this summer.

The Portuguese international, who has made 58 appearances for the Seleccao, is also keen on returning to Barcelona and is ready to reject all offers to seal a summer move to the Catalan club. However, talks between Barcelona and Manchester City have not progressed as well as either club would have liked, until now.

Will Cancelo return to Barcelona?

Barcelona recently stepped up the efforts to sign Joao Cancelo from Manchester City in the summer transfer window. The Manchester City outcast is seemingly the long-sought solution for the right-back berth, considering his exploits for the Blaugrana in the 2023/24 season.

The latest update has brought good news for all parties, with Barcelona and Manchester City agreeing on a loan-to-buy deal for Cancelo. The valuation of the operation will be around €25 million. While a “full agreement” is still some time away, the 58-cap Portuguese international will likely return to Barcelona in the coming weeks.

Cancelo will heave a sigh of relief after Juventus and Saudi Pro League clubs stepped up their efforts to secure his services in the summer transfer window. However, as they say, “all’s well that ends well”, with a Barcelona return on the cards for the 30-year-old.
