PSG optimistic of beating Barcelona in Nico Williams chase

Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly confident of winning the race to sign Athletic Club attacker Nico Williams, a target for Barcelona.

According to a report by Spanish outlet MARCA, Nico Williams is the subject of interest from Paris Saint-Germain. The reigning Ligue 1 champions are keen on bolstering their attack in the summer transfer window by signing the Athletic Club forward, whose release clause is worth €58 million. The Spanish international is also a target for Barcelona.

Nico Williams and his rapid rise

Nico Williams has established himself as one of the best young players in the world in the last 24 months. The Spaniard rose in prominence after breaking into the first-team squad at Athletic Club, having gone under the radar during his youth career.

The 22-year-old has taken no time to become a mainstay in the final third for his club and country and was instrumental in Spain returning to the summit of European football by winning UEFA Euro 2024. Williams was incredible for Athletic Club in the 2023/24 season, contributing to 27 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions by finding the back of the net eight times and providing 19 assists.

Meanwhile, Nico Williams’s exploits for his club and country have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs across Europe. Many Premier League bigwigs have shown interest in the Spanish international. However, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are his likeliest destinations in the summer transfer window.

Big summer move on the cards?

Barcelona’s interest in Nico Williams is understandable. The Catalan giants are keen on bolstering their attack in the summer transfer window and want to recreate the wide-attacking pairing from the Spanish national side alongside Lamine Yamal. They have recently intensified the talks to sign the Athletic Club attacker.

However, coughing up €58 million might be an issue for Barcelona, paving the way for other prospective suitors, including PSG, to challenge the Blaugrana to Nico Williams’s signature. The Ligue 1 champions are ready to pounce, and they are confident of winning the race to secure the Spaniard’s signature.

Coughing up €58 million to sign the 22-year-old Spanish international might not be a problem for PSG, considering Kylian Mbappe’s departure has lightened the wage bill. So, it will be interesting to see if PSG can beat Barcelona to Nico Williams’s signature in the summer transfer window.
