Manchester United will not trigger purchase option for Sofyan Amrabat but retain interest

Manchester United have decided not to trigger the buy option to sign Moroccan international midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have finally made a decision regarding the future of loanee Sofyan Amrabat. They will not trigger the €20 million purchase option clause in his contract. However, they remain interested in his services and are willing to discuss different terms with Fiorentina to sign him.

Amrabat became the talk of the town following his heroics for Morocco at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also had an exceptional 2022/23 season with Fiorentina on the back of which Manchester United acquired his services last summer.

Manchester United won’t trigger buy option for Sofyan Amrabat

The Red Devils paid €10 million upfront as a loan fee with another €5 million in add-ons to add him to their squad for a season. Sofyan Amrabat could not hit the ground running at Old Trafford. He did star in quite a few games in the initial part of the season. But the Moroccan international could not live up to the expectations.

He was involved in 30 matches and racked up just over 1,500 minutes. The 27-year-old failed to reach the levels he did during his time in Italy. While Manchester United had the option to put him permanently by triggering the €20 million buy option, they have finally decided not to go ahead. They have informed Fiorentina about their decision.

Manchester United remain interested in Amrabat

Sofyan Amrabat has returned to his parent club, but his future there remains uncertain. With just 12 months left on his deal with them, the player seems keen on making a move to a bigger club. The Reds Devils might not have triggered the clause, but they still retain interest in him.

While he did not have the desired impact on the pitch, Erik ten Hag remains an admirer of the player. His work rate and his versatility were quite useful for the Dutch manager last season. He could still be an important part of their squad.

As a result, Manchester United retain their interest in Sofyan Amrabat and are willing to hold talks with Fiorentina to discuss fresh terms as they look to bring him back on a much lower fee. But, they won’t things that straightforward as multiple top clubs want to sign him ahead of next season.
