According to French journalist Santi Aouna, 25-year-old Chelsea defender Malang Sarr has reached an agreement with Ligue 1 club RC Lens, and he is on the verge of completing a move away from Stamford Bridge permanently.
Malang Sarr and his struggles
The struggling defender has already agreed on a contract with the Ligue 1 club, and he will look to get his career back on track with regular football in France. Sarr has barely played for Chelsea since joining the club in August 2020.
He has had multiple loan spells away from the club to FC Porto and AS Monaco. However, the Frenchman never really managed to establish himself as a key player for either club. His contract comes to an end next summer, and it is no surprise that Chelsea have decided to get rid of him.
The French defender has made a total of 21 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions since joining them in 2020, and it is fair to assume that he has been a major flop for the Blues. Regardless, he managed to win the FIFA Club World Cup with them in 2021.
Ligue 1 return on the horizon?
The defender is still relatively young and he could get his career back on track if he gets ample opportunities with RC Lens. The French outfit need to improve their defensive options, and the 25-year-old could be a useful acquisition for them.
Malang Sarr has shown his quality in the past during his time at OGC Nice, and he will look to establish himself as a key player for lens. The defender has extensive experience of playing in Ligue 1, and he should be able to settle in quickly and make an instant impact.
The Frenchman still has a lot to prove at this level, and he has plenty of time to get back to his best. Meanwhile, Chelsea should look to bring in a quality replacement this summer, and it remains to be seen whether they can plug the gaps in their defensive unit.
