Liverpool have enquired about the availability of Bayer Leverkusen defender Odilon Kossounou amidst interest from Newcastle United.
According to a report from CaughtOffside, Liverpool knocked on Bayer Leverkusen’s door to enquire about Odilon Kossounou’s services. The Reds are keen on bolstering their defence ahead of next season and see him as an ideal fit for Arne Slot’s system.
Kossounou joined the German club in the summer of 2021 and has gone from strength to strength since. The 23-year-old has established himself as one of their mainstays. He played a key part in their exceptional 2023/24 season where they won the Bundesliga title unbeaten.
While he still has two years left on his deal at Leverkusen, he seems keen on making a move to the Premier League this summer. There is significant interest in his services from England with Liverpool being the front-runners.
The Merseyside club haven’t made any signings so far but are expected to make quite a few important additions to Arne Slot’s team before the new season kick starts. Bringing in a new centre-back seems to be one of the priorities for the Merseyside club.
Liverpool keen on signing Kossounou
The Reds want an ideal replacement for Joel Matip who has left the club following the expiry of his contract. The Leverkusen star is admired by the people at Anfield and they would love to have him at their disposal. They have already approached the German club to learn more about a potential transfer.
Kossounou is keen on a move to the Premier League and he hasn’t responded to a renewal offer from Leverkusen. With just two years left on his deal, the German club seem ready to cash in on him if an ideal offer arrives.
They are looking for around €40/€45 million for the 23-year-old centre-back. Liverpool seem quite interested in going ahead with the deal and they could sell Nathaniel Phillips, Sepp van den Berg and Rhys Williams to raise funds for the transfer.
But, they could face competition from Newcastle who are also checking to see if they can strike a deal to bring Kossounou to their club. Eddie How wants to add another centre-back to his ranks as he seeks more depth and he is said to be a fan of the former Club Brugge player.
