RC Lens eyeing Malang Sarr swoop

RC Lens are reportedly keen on signing Chelsea centre-back Malang Sarr, with the Blues ready to sell the out-of-favour defender.

According to Fabrizio Romano, RC Lens have a concrete interest in the services of Chelsea outcast Malang Sarr. The 25-year-old defender is expected to be on the move this summer, and the Ligue 1 club are looking to bring him back to France.

Sarr made quite a name for himself coming up the ranks at OGC Nice. He made it to their first team in the summer of 2016 and had a four-year stint with them before leaving the club in 2020. The Frenchman joined Chelsea as a free agent after his contract with Nice came to an end.

The move to the Premier League club has not worked out for the centre-back. He spent the first season out on loan at FC Porto, where he hardly got regular first-team action. While he did join the Blues for the 2022/23 campaign, he failed to break into their starting XI and only made a handful of appearances.

To get things back on track, he joined AS Monaco on a season-long loan. But even that did not go according to plan. While Sarr did return to his parent club ahead of the 2023/24 season, he was left out of their first-team squad by then-manager Mauricio Pochettino.

RC Lens want to sign Chelsea outcast Sarr

The French defender trained with Chelsea’s academy players and did not make even a single appearance last season. While he still has a year left on his contract, the Blues are desperate to get him off their books, and there is interest in his services from Lens.

The Ligue 1 outfit finished seventh last season and in an attempt to push for a European spot, they are keen on reinforcing their squad. They want more quality at the back and are looking to give Sarr an opportunity to revive his career.

RC Lens have a concrete interest in signing the 25-year-old and have already held initial talks to bring him back to France. While Chelsea are prepared to sanction his departure, the deal entirely depends on the player. Sarr will be desperate to have regular first-team action, but he might have to take a huge pay cut. As a result, it will be interesting to see if he gives the move a green light.
