Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City full-back Yan Couto regarding a potential transfer.
Borussia Dortmund are keen on signing Manchester City full-back Yan Couto ahead of next season as they look to reinforce their squad. According to reputed German journalist Patrick Berger, the Bundesliga giants have already reached an agreement in principle with the player regarding a potential transfer.
Couto joined Manchester City back in the summer of 2020 after making a name for himself while coming up the ranks at Coritiba FC. He has never been a part of their first team as the 22-year-old has been out on loan since joining the City Group.
Couto’s exceptional rise to the top
Last season, Couto was on loan at sister club Girona having joined them back in 2022 for his second loan stint with them. Couto had a decent 2022/23 season but last time out, he seemed to be on fire. The right-back was involved in 34 La Liga games and he ended up contributing towards 11 goals (1 goal, 10 assists).
His exceptional performances helped Girona qualify for the Champions League, and it helped him secure his place in Brazil’s squad for the Copa America. While he is back at his parent club, his future at Manchester City looks uncertain with his contract running out in 12 months.
Manchester City can surely consider incorporating him into their backline. But they already have a lot of depth at the back and Kyle Walker is their preferred right-back choice. With Couto’s contract running out, multiple clubs are keen on prising him away.
Borussia Dortmund make move to sign Couto
Borussia Dortmund are one of the clubs interested in the youngster, who has made quite a name for himself thanks to his exceptional performances last season. While the German giants do have Julian Ryerson in their squad, he is the only out-and-out right-back in the team.
Their interest in Couto is quite understandable as he has a completely different profile to that of Ryerson. The Manchester City full-back prospect is a more attacking option and can even feature as a winger if needed. Dortmund have already taken a major step towards signing him by agreeing terms with the player, who is keen on joining the German club.
While the Brazilian full-back has given the green light to the move, Manchester City’s asking price could end up being a problem for Dortmund. There is no mention of the price but the report does suggest that City are demanding too much at this stage.
