Manchester United make approach for Jonathan Tah

Manchester United have reportedly enquired about 28-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, who has emerged as an alternative to Matthijs de Ligt.

According to reputed German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Jonathan Tah is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window, with the 28-year-old emerging as a target. And they have submitted an enquiry for the Bayer Leverkusen defender, who might leave the Bundesliga champions.

The rise of Jonathan Tah

Jonathan Tah has made considerable progress since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Hamburger SV in July 2015. A native of Hamburg, the German international spent most of his formative years at Altona 93 but graduated from the youth division at Hamburger SV. However, his stock has risen during his spell with Bayer Leverkusen.

The 28-year-old has turned out over 350 times thus far for Bayer Leverkusen while chipping in with 14 goals and 12 assists. Tah was instrumental in Die Werkself shocking German football and winning the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season, with Bayern Munich finishing 18 points behind them.

However, the experienced defender faces an uncertain future at Bayer Leverkusen after entering the final 12 months of his contract. Such a situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, particularly from the Premier League. The latest update has linked Tah with Manchester United.

Premier League beckons?

Manchester United’s interest in Jonathan Tah is understandable. The Red Devils have been scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window after losing Raphael Varane as a free agent. So, several candidates, including Matthijs de Ligt, have emerged on Manchester United’s radar.

Tah is an alternative to de Ligt, with the Red Devils keeping their options open. The latest update has pointed to Manchester United submitting an enquiry to Bayer Leverkusen to sign him from the Bundesliga club in the summer transfer window. However, widespread reports have heavily linked him with a move across the Bundesliga to Bayern Munich.

Interestingly, Bayern Munich will secure Jonathan Tah’s services after selling Matthijs de Ligt. So, the 28-year-old Bundesliga winner’s fate directly depends on the Bayern Munich centre-back this summer.
