Liverpool leading the race to sign Teun Koopmeiners

Liverpool could head in front of the queue for Teun Koopmeiners should they manage to convince the player of a move to Anfield.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness, Liverpool are looking to sign Teun Koopmeiners, with Atalanta encouraging bids from outside of Italy. The Reds are considered in the queue for the midfielder, although Juventus’ interest could complicate the transfer.

Liverpool in Teun Koopmeiners race

Liverpool are in the market for a new midfielder and are exploring a variety of options, from someone to do defensive duties to a player with box-to-box capabilities. They reportedly missed out on Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer after Brighton snatched him away, and Arne Slot could look at another option in the market.

They had planned to end the chase for Teun Koopmeiners earlier, but now it appears Liverpool are planning to revive their pursuit. The Dutch midfielder was ruled out of the Euros with an injury but is expected to return shortly to take part in Atalanta’s pre-season.

Liverpool also have Atalanta’s Ederson in their sights, as the chances of signing both players are remote. Now, they are reluctantly exploring a move for Koopmeiners, with Atalanta reportedly demanding at least €60 million for the Dutch midfielder.

Koopmeiners was a great presence for Atalanta, scoring 16 goals last season as they lifted the Europa League trophy. Losing him would be bad for the Italian side, although they are open to a sale and will hope Liverpool comes up with a good enough offer.

Juventus’ pursuit could complicate Liverpool’s transfer

Reading between reports, it’s clear that Koopmeiners might prefer to stay in Italy and join Juventus. The report states the Bianconeri have a broad agreement on personal terms with the Atalanta midfielder, although they are not willing to pay the €60 million asking price.

Juventus might be ready to fork out €40 million, and this impasse could provide Liverpool with the opportunity. However, with the player intent on joining the Turin giants, Liverpool might have to convince Koopmeiners about a switch to Anfield. Should they manage that, then the Reds will be in pole position for the midfielder.
