Liverpool failed with last-minute hijack attempt for Mats Wieffer

Liverpool reportedly failed in a last-ditch attempt to lure Mats Wieffer, who is on the brink of joining Brighton & hove Albion from Feyenoord.

According to De Telegraaf, Liverpool reportedly failed with a late attempt to sign Mats Wieffer. The defensive midfielder is on the brink of joining Brighton & Hove Albion from Feyenoord, as former boss Arne Slot may have considered him an ideal player for his Liverpool side.

Liverpool fails with Mats Wieffer’s approach

Liverpool are in the market to shore up their midfield, as Arne Slot will have thought about a player who can sit at the base. There has been a certain need for a player in that position since last summer, as the club have not sufficiently replaced the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson since their departures.

Mats Wieffer had been a target for Liverpool and on their list since the appointment of Arne Slot. The new boss coached the midfielder during his time at Feyenoord and thought about bringing him alongside to Anfield.

The report claims Liverpool may have failed with a late approach for the 24-year-old midfielder, as the suggestion is that they went to enquire with the player’s camp. The Reds did not approach Feyenoord directly and have failed to lure him in.

Brighton & Hove Albion had already leapfrogged the likes of Liverpool and others in the race for the 24-year-old midfielder. Liverpool might still pursue a new defensive midfielder ahead of the summer window, although Arne Slot will have to miss the chance to reunite with his former star and top performer at Feyenoord.

Brighton & Hove Albion seal Wieffer move

Brighton & Hove Albion have found an agreement for Wieffer for a €30 million deal that will also include add-ons on top of the final fee. The 24-year-old midfielder reportedly had a €30 million release clause, but Feyenoord were able to negotiate add-ons and even a sell-on clause in his contract.

Liverpool might have left it too late in the race for Wieffer, as Arne Slot would have wanted to bring him to Anfield. Meanwhile, Brighton have a fantastic player in the Feyenoord star, who will benefit from the style of play at the Amex Stadium.
