Romelu Lukaku ready to open talks to join AC Milan and Napoli

Romelu Lukaku is reportedly ready to initiate discussions to sign Serie A clubs AC Milan and Napoli, with Chelsea demanding €30 million to sell him.

According to a report by Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Football Italia, a return to Serie A might be on the cards for Romelu Lukaku. AC Milan and Napoli are vying for the signature Belgian international heading into the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, Chelsea will not accept anything lower than €30 million to part ways with the beleaguered striker.

Romelu Lukaku and his rollercoaster ride

Romelu Lukaku has endured a trial by fire since rejoining Chelsea from Inter Milan in a then-club record deal in August 2021. The 31-year-old would have hoped for a happy homecoming but experienced a horrific 2021/22 campaign at Stamford Bridge. So, it was hardly surprising when Chelsea loaned him back to the Nerazzurri in July 2022.

While Lukaku was excellent on his return to San Siro, his talks with Juventus angered the decision-makers at Inter Milan, thus blocking a permanent move last summer. But AS Roma rescued the Belgian international, who enjoyed a solid 2023/24 campaign with the Giallorossi, amassing 21 goals and five assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.

Romelu Lukaku’s exploits compelled AS Roma to seek another move for him heading into the summer transfer window. The experienced striker has also been keen on remaining at Stadio Olimpico. However, a deal will not materialise due to Chelsea’s asking price of €30 million. Meanwhile, a return to Serie A might be on the cards, with AC Milan and Napoli vying for his signature.

Will Lukaku join a third Serie A club?

AC Milan’s interest in Romelu Lukaku is understandable. The Serie A giants have already established contacts over a move for the Chelsea outcast as they look to fill Olivier Giroud’s void after the Frenchman’s departure. Lukaku is thus a viable target for AC Milan, with the former Manchester United striker open to initiating discussions to join the Rossoneri.

As for Napoli, Antonio Conte is keen on reuniting with Lukaku at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in the summer transfer window. The Italian tactician has already alluded to a potential move in his recent comments. And Lukaku is ready to open talks to join Napoli despite his history with Inter Milan.

However, AC Milan and Napoli have a stumbling block in their bid to secure Romelu Lukaku’s services due to Chelsea insisting they will not sell him for less than €30 million. A loan move is not on the cards either, so it will be interesting to see where he plies his trade next season.
