Tottenham rival several Serie A giants in Giovanni Leoni pursuit

Tottenham are eager to bring in teenage defender Giovanni Leoni this summer but face an uphill task of beating Serie A sides in the race.

According to Sampnews 24, Tottenham are the only English side vying for the signature of in-demand teenage defender Giovanni Leoni. The youngster has come in for massive interest following his impressive season with Serie B side Sampdoria. However, Spurs faces the big test of beating some notable Serie A sides for his signature.

Tottenham keen on Giovanni Leoni

Tottenham are keen to bring some interesting young stars into the mix as they aim to strengthen their squads for the future. While they are looking at players who could flourish in their youth sides, Spurs might also want players on the brink of a first-team breakthrough.

For instance, Sampdoria’s 17-year-old in-demand Italian defensive sensation Giovanni Leoni has emerged as a player of acute interest for Tottenham. The idea would involve the North Londoners bringing in another young defender to the mix and giving him time very close to the established first-team stars.

Ashley Phillips played that role last season, and with Sheffield United keen on the teenager, Tottenham might bring in another such prospect to the club. Should they succeed in the Leoni pursuit, then Phillips could probably be sent out on loan, which would make total sense for the development of the player.

Spurs also have fantastic connections in Italy, meaning they may have had a good chance to take a close look at the player before getting involved in talks with Sampdoria. Should they bring Leoni, they will add him to an exciting group of upcoming centre-backs like Phillips and Luka Vuskovic, as these players appear to be a solid group for the future.

Serie A clubs to challenge Tottenham for Leoni

The idea of signing Leoni from Sampdoria may not be a straightforward affair, as multiple Serie A sides are angling for a move for the 17-year-old in-demand Italian defensive sensation. The report has named the likes of Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan as suitors, a key factor that would make it difficult for Spurs to conclude this deal.

Young Italian players, particularly defenders, are more inclined to stay put in the country and probably gain massive experience for years before even thinking of a move abroad. That might be the case with Leoni, who might pay more attention to the interests of the big Serie A sides before even thinking of a move to Spurs.
