Tottenham initiate discussions to sign Riccardo Calafiori

Tottenham hold initial talks over the potential signing of Riccardo Calafiori amidst interest from Newcastle and Chelsea.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle are all keen on acquiring the services of Riccardo Calafiori. The Bologna defender has become the talk of the town on the back of his impressive performances and Spurs are among the clubs that have held initial talks to sign the Italian international.

The Italian defender had an exceptional debut season at Bologna under Thiago Motta. He was one of the best young defenders in the Serie A. The 22-year-old was involved in 37 games and he even had seven goal contributions to his name.

On the back of his consistent performances, Calafiori managed to book a place in the Italian squad for the Euros and representatives of multiple top clubs are scouting him at the continental tournament.

Tottenham, Newcastle & Chelsea keen on Calafiori

While he still has three years on his deal, multiple top clubs are ready to prise him away from Bologna. Tottenham are one of the clubs who have been linked with the versatile defender as Ange Postecoglou wants more depth at the back.

Despite having signed two centre-backs over the last two windows, he is keen on adding another and believes Calfiori could be a sensational signing for them. The North London club have already initiated discussions to sign him. But, they are not the only ones, Newcastle have also had some talks about acquiring the services of Calafiori.

The Magpies might enter the 2024/25 season without Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles as both picked up long-term injuries towards the end of the recently concluded season. As a result, they are looking to add more quality to their backline and Calafiori is quite high on their wishlist.

Chelsea are also keen on his signature. While they might not have initiated any talks yet, the Blues are looking at him as an option to bolster their defence with Thiago Silva no longer at the club.

With 40% of his future sale promised to his former club FC Basel, Bologna will try their best to keep hold of their star defender. The report suggests that a minimum of €35 million will be needed to prise him away. But, there is a major problem for the English clubs as the player seems keen on a move to Juventus as he looks to reunite with former boss Motta.
