Manchester United hold internal discussions for Matthijs de Ligt

Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing 24-year-old Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt in the summer transfer window.

According to reputed German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United have held internal discussions about signing 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender Matthijs de Ligt in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United are hoping to sign the Dutchman for a fee of around €50 million, and it will be interesting to see if the Bundesliga club are willing to oblige. The defender has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past as well, and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United can finally bring him to English football.

The Netherlands international is a quality player with a big future, and he could be a key player for Manchester United in the long term. He would be the ideal replacement for Raphael Varane who has left the club as a free agent. Matthijs de Ligt could form a solid partnership with Lisandro Martinez.

Both players have played for Ajax in the past, and they have worked with the Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as well. A reunion at Old Trafford could be exciting for all parties. €50 million would be a reasonable price for a player of his quality in today’s market, and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United can pull off the transfer in the coming weeks.

Improving the defensive unit should be a top priority for them. They looked quite vulnerable at the back last season, and they cannot hope to compete with Arsenal or Manchester City with their current defence. Ideally, they should look to invest in two quality defenders this summer. They should look to sign a quality full-back as well.

De Ligt would improve Man United

Matthijs de Ligt has proven himself in the Eredivisie, Serie A, and the Bundesliga. He will look to prove himself in the Premier League as well. There is no doubt that he has the physical and technical attributes to do well in English football.

The 24-year-old is still quite young, and he is likely to improve with coaching and experience. He could develop into a long term asset for the club. Furthermore, the Dutchman is very impressive on the ball and his distribution skills from the back will help Manchester United in their build-up play. He knows Erik ten Hag’s footballing philosophy well and should be able to settle in quickly and make an instant impact next season.
