Manchester City leapfrog Barcelona in Joshua Kimmich chase

Manchester City have taken the lead in the race to sign Bayern Munich midfield star Joshua Kimmich this summer.

According to a report from SPORT, Manchester City have overtaken Barcelona in the pursuit of Joshua Kimmich. The German international could part ways with Bayern Munich in the upcoming transfer window, and Pep Guardiola’s team could be his next destination.

Kimmich has been an integral part of all the success the German giants have had in recent years, including winning the treble a few years ago. He has only gone from strength to strength since joining them back in 2015. While he is a very important part of their first team, the 29-year-old utility man could part ways with the club in the summer.

He is not entirely convinced about the Bayern Munich project and could push for a move. With his contract expiring in the summer of 2025, the German club are also pondering about his future. According to reports, they are once again going after the signature of Joao Palhinha and if they manage to sign him, they could sanction the departure of Kimmich.

Manchester City overtake Barcelona in Kimmich pursuit

While Bayern Munich continue negotiations with Fulham for the Portuguese international, Manchester City have taken the lead in the race for the services of Kimmich. The German international has been on the wishlist of Barcelona for the last two years. Xavi Hernandez was sure he could help them take the next step but Joan Laporta had other ideas.

Xavi has been sacked and on top of that, Laporta has ruled out the signing of the Bayern Munich utility man in an interview he gave to media. With Barcelona taking a step back, Manchester City have a clear opportunity to sign Kimmich and reunite him with Pep Guardiola.

The Spanish boss has worked with the German during his time at Bayern Munich. He is well aware of his capabilities and would love to have him around. His versatility will give Guardiola quite a few tactical options as he is equally good as a right-back, a central midfielder and a defensive one.

City are keen on signing him and they can surely afford to meet his current wages of €10 million as the player has no intentions of lowering. While Kimmich’s priority was to join Barcelona, he is now clear that a move to Camp Nou is unlikely and is open to listening to other proposals, although Real Madrid have also ruled out a move.
