Manchester City considering Mike Maignan swoop

Manchester City are considering a big move for Mike Maignan to potentially replace Ederson should the Brazilian depart in the summer.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City are considering a move for Mike Maignan as a replacement for Ederson ahead of the summer. The latter could depart amid interest from Saudi Arabia, as the club’s chiefs see the 28-year-old French international as a significant replacement option and view him as a high-ceiling player.

Manchester City are interested in Mike Maignan

Manchester City will have to take a closer look at their goalkeeping situation ahead of the summer, as there might be some drastic changes afoot. Pep Guardiola would love to keep his current pairing of Ederson and Stefan Ortega. But both keepers could depart.

Earlier suggestions pointed towards them only losing one of the two, with Ortega the clear favourite to depart in that scenario. Manchester City were linked with Werder Bremen’s Michael Zetterer, and he’s seen more as a replacement for Ortega rather than Ederson.

There is considerable Saudi Arabian interest in Ederson, with Manchester City likely to consider bids in excess of £40 million for the Brazilian international. Should he leave, then the club are angling a move for 28-year-old French international Mike Maignan as his high-quality replacement.

Maignan has been fantastic for Milan since joining the club in 2021, and over the last three seasons, he has attracted tremendous interest. A move to Manchester City would be a big step up from Milan, and he would have the chance to win trophies on a regular basis. However, all eyes will be on Milan and their asking price, with the club reportedly asking for fees close to the €100 million mark for the keeper.

Will AC Milan sell Maignan?

There has been plenty of chatter about Maignan signing a new deal with Milan, but the new offer has not been forthcoming so far. The club is in a transition mode as Stefano Pioli will depart, and much will depend on what the new manager wants. Either way, they will demand a significant fee for the 28-year-old French international, who has two years left on his current deal.

Manchester City are few of the club who can pay top money for a player of Maignan’s quality. A new offer could come in from Milan’s end in the close season, although should they offer him less money than he asks, a departure from San Siro might materialise.
