Fulham will reportedly look to sign 22-year-old English defender Teden Mengi from Luton Town in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by The Athletic, Teden Mengi is the subject of interest from Fulham. The Cottagers are keen on signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window after losing Tosin Adarabioyo as a free agent. The 22-year-old Luton Town defender has thus emerged as a target for the West London club.
Teden Mengi and his career so far
Teden Mengi finally found a stable footing in his professional career after joining Luton Town from Manchester United last summer. A native of Manchester United, the youngster spent his formative years with the Red Devils, with the coaches in their academy rating him highly.
However, regular game time with the first team eluded Mengi, and he had to suffice with attaining that during loan spells at Derby County and Birmingham City FC. So, the move to Luton Town last summer was the right decision for him, even though the Hatters failed to evade relegation from the Premier League.
Mengi was a mainstay at the back for Luton Town, turning out 35 times across all competitions while chipping in with one goal. The Englishman’s performances made him one of the standout performers for the Hatters before they went down to the EFL Championship. Meanwhile, Mengi’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Fulham.
Premier League return on the horizon?
Fulham’s interest in Teden Mengi is understandable. The Cottagers are losing Tosin Adarabioyo as a free agent in the summer transfer window, with the 26-year-old on the verge of joining Chelsea in a Bosman move. In addition, Tim Ream is approaching the final phase of his career.
So, it behoves Fulham to invest in a centre-back in the summer transfer window. Several candidates, including Trevoh Chalobah, have emerged on the West London club’s radar. However, Mengi is also a viable target, as he can be a long-term solution at the heart of the defence.
The 22-year-old will unlikely cost a bomb, considering Luton Town’s relegated status. So, it will be interesting to see if Fulham can seal an acceptable deal for the former Manchester United defender in the summer transfer window.
