Newcastle United are very optimistic about landing Bournemouth defensive ace Lloyd Kelly at the club ahead of next season.
According to a report from Football Insider, Newcastle United are confident about acquiring the services of Lloyd Kelly. The Magpies are in desperate need of defensive reinforcement ahead of next season and they do not want to miss out on the signature of the Bournemouth star following their failed pursuit of Tosin Adarabioyo.
Newcastle’s need for defensive reinforcement
Eddie Howe’s team struggled at the back during the 2023/24 season and injuries didn’t help their cause during the campaign. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles picked up long-term injuries towards the end of last season. They might not make it back in time for the start of the 2024/25 season, as a result, Howe is keen on adding more depth and quality to his defence.
They were closing on the signature of Adarabioyo but missed out on him as Chelsea hijacked the deal. The Blues offered him a better deal and snatched him away from the Magpies who have now shifted their attention towards Kelly.
The 25-year-old has been a part of the Bournemouth setup since joining them from Bristol City in 2019 in a deal worth £13 million. He has been a consistent performer for the Cherries over the years but he is all set to end his stint at the club with his contract running out later this month.
Newcastle are pushing hard for Kelly’s signature
Kelly wants to try a new challenge, he wants to join a bigger club and looks all set for a move to Newcastle. While injuries restricted him to 25 appearances last season, the Magpies feel he could be an ideal fit for them. His ability to feature as a left-back and a centre-back will be a huge boost for Howe who seeks more depth at the back.
With the defender available for free amidst their financial struggles, the Magpies have made him their priority target. They are pushing hard to complete his signing as quickly as possible as they want to avoid competition from elsewhere.
Newcastle are very confident about agreeing a deal with the player regarding a move to St James’ Park. They have already submitted an offer for the 25-year-old and further negotiations will take place on Monday and over the course of the week. A deal could be struck as early as Friday as per the report.
