Jorge Mendes has reportedly offered Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez to Barcelona as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Barcelona will have the chance to sign Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window. Jorge Mendes has offered the Uruguayan international to the Blaugrana. Interestingly, the Liverpool striker was ready to join Barcelona in 2020 before he moved to Benfica.
Darwin Nunez and his Liverpool journey
Darwin Nunez has blown hot and cold since joining Liverpool from Benfica in a deal worth €75 million in July 2022. The 24-year-old was a hot property in the market before moving to Anfield, with several high-profile clubs pursuing his signature. However, he has attracted a lot of criticism for his profligacy in front of the goal.
The Uruguayan international has enjoyed a productive campaign, amassing 18 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions. However, the criticism has not eluded Nunez, whose wastefulness in the final third has not gone away. Nevertheless, the player’s stock in the market remains high.
Widespread reports have heavily linked the Liverpool striker with several high-profile clubs, particularly from La Liga. And a move to Barcelona might be on the cards, with Jorge Mendes offering Nunez to the Catalan outfit if Robert Lewandowski leaves the Blaugrana in the summer transfer window.
Will Nunez return to Spain?
Recent reports have also suggested that Darwin Nunez is the subject of interest from Barcelona. With Lewandowski well into his thirties, the Blaugrana should map out a succession plan for the veteran Polish striker. The Liverpool attacker has thus emerged as a viable target, with his versatility making him an attractive target.
Nunez’s ability to play on the left flank means he can also play alongside Lewandowski, making him a viable target for Barcelona. However, the 24-year-old will unlikely come cheap, considering his contract with Liverpool runs until June 30, 2028. So, it might not be surprising to see the Reds demanding more than €75 million to part ways with him.
Interestingly, Nunez was ready to join Barcelona in 2020 before Benfica intervened and signed him from Almeria. Meanwhile, the Uruguayan international has previous experience in Spain and might not take long to settle down at the Catalan club. So, it will be interesting to see if his Liverpool stint ends anytime soon.
