Arsenal are unlikely to offer their 30-year-old defensive midfielder Thomas party a new contract to extend his stay at the club.
According to David Ornstein via GiveMeSport, Arsenal will not offer Thomas Partey a new deal. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder is no longer an influential figure in that dressing room and he is future is not certain by any means.
Thomas Partey’s time at Arsenal
Arsenal acquired the services of Partey from Atletico Madrid back in 2020. He has been an integral part of their first team since arriving at the club. He featured in 33 league games for them last season but a lot has changed this time around.
Injuries have troubled him but he has also gone down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta. Partey has only been involved in nine Premier League games this term and has racked up less than 400 minutes.
The 30-year-old’s contract runs until the summer of 2025. With just over 12 months left on his deal and his game time taking a major hit this time around, there is a lot of interest in his services.
Partey’s uncertain future
His future at the North London club has been uncertain for a while now. While the manager seems to be happy having the experienced star in his dressing room, the club could consider cashing in on him as they are unlikely to offer him a new deal as per Ornstein.
Journalist David Ornstein while talking on The Athletic FC podcast said: “There are clear questions that need to be answered around Thomas Partey, who is approaching the final year of his contract,”
“He barely plays for Arsenal anymore.
“He seems to be fit now. But he’s not really getting on the pitch and he’s not influencing. We know how good he can be. But recent times have not worked out how everybody would hope.
“I don’t imagine he’ll be getting a new contract. So do you sell? Or do you retain him as a player and you see that value in the final year as being better than a transfer fee?”
Ornstein feels the 30-year-old is not influential anymore, he hasn’t played the number one games one would expect him to play. Injuries have troubled him and things haven’t really worked out for him.
While the North London club will not offer him a new deal, they will have to make a decision on whether to sell him in the summer or have him for another 12 months and then let him leave for nothing.
