Liverpool are scouting Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners ahead of the summer, but they are not favourites to sign him.
According to Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Teun Koopmeiners has been scouted by Liverpool over the recent period, but the Reds are not the favourites to land him. Juventus are the frontrunners for the 25-year-old midfielder, who continues to perform at his best levels for Atalanta this season.
Liverpool scouting Teun Koopmeiners
Teun Koopmeiners has significantly impacted Atalanta this season, scoring 12 times in all competitions. The Dutchman has established himself as one of the top performers in Serie A and with the national side, as he’s set to play a significant role for Ronald Koeman’s side at the EUROs.
Before the summer tournament, Koopmeiners might have switched from Atalanta to a bigger club, with Liverpool keen on the midfielder. The 25-year-old may come to fit the Merseysiders in their current system, but much will depend on who they install as their new manager in the summer.
As per Fabrizio Romano, the new Liverpool manager will be a crucial part of whether Koopmeiners will join the club. The Italian transfer guru considers Juventus to be the firm favourite to land the 25-year-old midfielder in the summer, as he also suggests the Merseysiders are also scouting him during important games for Atalanta this season.
Liverpool may not specifically need an attacking midfielder in their current squad, although a few departures could bring forward such a requirement. Most players will consider a move to the Merseysiders an ample opportunity, but Juventus could equally represent a vital club.
Romano said, “Juventus are the favourites to sign Teun Koopmeiners as he has been their top target for a long time, they want him and the relationship with Atalanta is very good.”
“Liverpool have been scouting him but again, a lot will depend on the decision on who will replace Jurgen Klopp as manager – it’s too early to mention Liverpool’s plans without a decision on the manager.”
Liverpool faces competition for Koopmeiners
Liverpool are about to sound out a move for the 25-year-old midfielder, although they might feel the pressure of competing clubs in the race. With Romano firmly insisting that Juventus is the favourite to land him, several more could pose a problem.
Manchester United and Tottenham are keen, although there are doubts whether either can offer him Champions League football. Liverpool and Juventus can undoubtedly provide him with that, which makes the two sides top contenders, with the Italians slightly ahead in the race.
