Atletico Madrid will have to battle it out with Liverpool and Barcelona for the signatures of Morrocan international Sofyan Amrabat.
According to a report by Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are looking at options to bolster their squad ahead of next season and they have their eyes set on Sofyan Amrabat. The 27-year-old midfielder hasn’t had the best of times at Manchester United but the Madrid-based club are still looking to make him one of their first signings for the 2024/25 season.
Amrabat’s failed United move
Amrabat’s exceptional performances for club and country resulted in interest from across Europe. Manchester United were keen on having him in their ranks and the player wanted to join the English giants. The Red Devils managed to sign him on a season-long loan with a buy option ahead of the ongoing season.
Unfortunately, the move hasn’t gone according to plan for the player. He failed to make an immediate impact and the rise of Kobbie Mainoo has seen him play as a rotation. Amrabat has had less than 1,200 minutes in his 22 outings.
His failed move has pretty much made it clear that United won’t trigger the buy option and he will return to his parent club. But, his contract there runs out in the summer of 2025. He is unlikely to pen down a new deal with the Italian outfit and they will look to sanction his departure.
Atletico Madrid keen on signing Amrabat
Atletico Madrid are keen on having him in their ranks. Despite his poor season at United, Diego Simeone feels that the Morrocan defensive midfielder could be a great addition to their ranks. They are pushing to make him their first signing of the summer.
But, the Madrid-based club will face competition from Liverpool and Barcelona. The Reds made major signings in the centre of the park last summer but they are still looking for another defensive midfielder and Amrabat is one of their targets.
Meanwhile, the Catalan giants signed Oriol Romeu last summer to cope with the absence of Sergio Busquets. Unfortunately, the short-term fix hasn’t worked and they need a new defensive midfielder. Barcelona who don’t have the best of financial situations are looking at the 27-year-old as a potential option to reinforce their midfield.
While United and Liverpool are willing to challenge Atletico, Simeone’s team are currently leading the race. They are willing to offer close €20 million and favourite to land him at the club.
